Zusammenfassung. Die Physikalische Chemie nimmt, wie der Name schon nahelegt, eine Zwischenstellung zwischen Chemie und Physik ein. Der Begriff wurde erstmals von Lomonossow verwendet, als er 1752 seinen „Lehrgang der Physikalischen Chemie“veröffentlichte.
Die ersten Lehrgänge zu Themen aus der physikalischen Chemie wurden um 1752 an der Lomonossow-Universität in Moskau von Michail Lomonossow gehalten. 1890 führten Svante Arrhenius, Jacobus Henricus van ’t Hoff, Wilhelm Ostwald und Walther Nernst erstmals die physikalische Chemie als eigenständiges Lehrfach an Hochschulen ein.

Atkins lehrte physikalische Chemie am UCLA und später am Lincoln College, Oxford, wo er bis zu seinem Ruhestand 2007 Lehrveranstaltungen über Quantenmechanik hielt. Atkins heiratete die Wissenschaftlerin Susan Greenfield 1990.
Ohne Zweifel ist der Atkins ein gutes Buch für den Einsteiger doch schon in meiner Einführungsvorlesung in physikalischer Chemie ging der Stoff teilweise deutlich über den Atkins hinaus.
